CARMEL, Calif. --

One person died and three others were hospitalized in a ocean-water rescue Saturday at Monastery Beach in Carmel.

Monterey County sheriff’s deputies said they rescued one person, a man, from the water at about 5:50 p.m. State park lifeguards also rescued a woman who was farther out in the water. Two other people had previously been pulled out of the water when deputies arrived.

Deputy Mike Fritsche said most of the victims required CPR, and that members of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, state park lifeguards and American Medical Response personnel assisted in the resuscitations.

All four victims were transported by ambulance to Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula, where one of the victims died.
