EDINBURGH, Ind. --

Two men were killed and 17 people were injured early Sunday morning in a crash involving a tractor-trailer and a full-size van on Interstate 65.

The crash happened at about 3:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes at mile marker 80, just south of the Edinburgh exit.

Shelby County sheriff's Lt. Travis Maloney said the tractor-trailer rear-ended the van, which was packed with 18 people, causing the van to roll over.

Two 20-year-old men in the van were pronounced dead at the scene. All of the other victims were taken to area hospitals, some with serious injuries.

The victims in the van are all from one Illinois family, police said.

"Reports were … that there was an Atlanta-based event for kite flying and that they were headed back to the Chicago area," Maloney said.

Three people in the van were listed in critical condition at Methodist Hospital.

The tractor-trailer driver, also from out of state, was hospitalized with chest pains.

Witnesses told police that the van had slowed and was trying to pull off on the shoulder and that the tractor-trailer was weaving on the road just before the crash.

Blood samples were taken from both drivers as police investigate the crash. The names of the victims weren't released.

Northbound I-65 was closed for about five hours.
