NREMT: Online Cognitive Exams to Launch Due to COVID-19

PRESS RELEASE

The National Registry has announced  that starting May 12, EMT and AEMT candidates can choose to take the official National Registry Cognitive (written) examination on their own computers at their home or office via new secure technology. Their current examination vendor, Pearson VUE, collaborated with us as we developed the technology to make our examination available on their secure online proctoring network, OnVUE.

The COVID-19 pandemic has evolved at a rapid pace. However, many emergency medical services personnel, departments and educational programs have especially felt the effects. The National Registry is committed to ensuring the pipeline of testing new EMS professionals is restored as quickly as possible. Their focus was on two levels with the most people ready to test—EMT and AEMT. Although the use of OnVUE for remote testing solutions are temporary for the current national emergency, the experience and lessons learned will help guide the organization toward future solutions that benefit all levels.

Remote testing is a new concept for both EMS professionals and the National Registry, which has developed a helpful list of popular questions and answers that will help students get started. You can find the FAQ and more resources on their website.

During the pandemic, EMT or AEMT candidates submitting an application to the National Registry will have the opportunity to select either an onsite (Pearson VUE location) or online (OnVUE) cognitive examination option. EMT and AEMT candidates will be permitted to change their examination delivery preference for no charge prior to scheduling an examination date.

The  OnVUE  examination is very similar to our structured in-person examinations conducted at Pearson VUE. Candidates will still schedule an  appointment, check in with multiple forms of ID, go through security checks and take the computer based examination while monitored by a Pearson VUE  representative.

Here are some resources to share with candidates interested in trying OnVUE to take their National Registry Examination.
