Surgical Robotics Technology Press Release

Cambridge, UK (28 June 2023) — Surgical Robotics Technology is delighted to announce the winners of the Surgical Robotics Industry Awards 2023. The Awards celebrate the best of the surgical robotics industry, recognizing the outstanding contribution of individuals, companies, and technologies.

There are four categories for the 2023 Awards: Industry Leadership, Innovative Start-up, Outstanding Company, and Groundbreaking Technology. The winners are detailed below.

Category: Industry Leadership

Joe Mullings has been building companies and careers since 1989. His search firm works with over 800 companies and is responsible for more than 8,000 successful searches in medtech, healthtech and life sciences with clients ranging from multi-billion-dollar companies to emerging high-tech organizations worldwide.

Category: Innovative Start-up

Winner: Moon Surgical

Moon Surgical is a pioneering surgical robotics start-up that has rapidly emerged as a key player in the industry. Despite being less than five years old, the company has already achieved significant milestones, including team formation, development, human clinical trials, FDA 510(k) clearance, and CE Mark, all in record time. Moon Surgical aims to change the scale at which robotic surgery is performed with their workflow integrated Maestro System.

“Being selected as the most Innovative Startup in the inaugural year of the Surgical Robotics Technology Awards is a testament to our team’s dedication and innovation. Our Maestro System, a symbol of adaptability in the surgical robotics field, is designed to conform to the surgeon, patient, and operating room rather than forcing them to adapt to the technology. We are proud to stand amongst distinguished peers, each forging new paths in surgery. This accolade fuels our ambition to continue enhancing the OR experience for care providers, and patient care globally.”

Anne Osdoit, CEO, Moon Surgical

Category: Outstanding Company

Winner: Medtronic

Medtronic is a global healthcare technology leader. The company’s Hugo™ robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) system is today in use in hospitals across five continents in urologic, gynecologic, and general surgery procedures. In addition, its Touch Surgery™ Enterprise enables surgeons to securely access their case footage seconds after the procedure is complete – from their phone or computer.

“This award is a testament to the connections we build at Medtronic between innovative technology and increased healthcare access for more patients around the world. Through our strong partnership with clinical teams — to empower them with extraordinary tools like Hugo™ and Touch Surgery™ Enterprise — we alleviate pain, restore health, and extend life. That’s why Medtronic was founded more than 60 years ago, and it continues to guide and inspire our work every day as we shape the future of surgery, together.”

Mike Marinaro, Executive Vice President and President, Surgical business at Medtronic

Category: Groundbreaking Technology

Winner: WITTENSTEIN: Miniaturized Galaxie® Gearbox

WITTENSTEIN’s miniaturized Galaxie® is the most compact hollow-shaft gearbox with the highest torsional rigidity, taking the proven principle of the company’s classic Galaxie® a step further. The miniaturized Galaxie® is the ideal choice for applications where maximum precision and safety are decisive even though only limited space is available and a lightweight design is paramount – for example, in medical robots.

“We are delighted to receive this award, which confirms that our miniaturized Galaxie® meets the needs of the surgical robotics market and enables new innovative solutions for the customers.”

Dr. Karoline Scheuermann, Business Developer at Business Pioneer of WITTENSTEIN SE

“Huge congratulations to the winners in this our first year of the awards. We have been blown away by the engagement the awards have received from the surgical robotics community with thousands casting a vote for their winners. Our aim when launching the awards was to recognize the incredible people, companies and tech driving this industry forward, and I am proud to say we achieved this.”
