Adults without mental health conditions can prevent future cases of depression by engaging in at least 1 hour of exercise weekly, researchers found in a prospective study published in The American Journal of Psychiatry.

The study followed a cohort of 33,908 adults for 11 years. They found exercise, regardless of the intensity, was linked with lower levels of future depression. Exercise, however, did not protect against anxiety.

Researchers determined 12% of future depression cases could have been prevented if all participants exercised for at least 1 hour a week.

The social and physical benefits of exercise explained some of the effect, but previously proposed biological mechanisms, such as changes in parasympathetic vagal tone, did not appear to play a role, according to researchers.

"Relatively modest changes in population levels of exercise may have important public mental health benefits and prevent a substantial number of new cases of depression,” the study team wrote.
