VA Launches Mobile Mileage Claim Feature for Veterans Using Health and Benefits App
The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has introduced a new feature in its Health and Benefits mobile app that allows eligible veterans to submit and track “mileage-only” travel claims using their smartphones or other mobile devices.
The update aims to streamline the reimbursement process for veterans who travel to VA medical appointments in their personal vehicles. Previously, many veterans submitted these claims using paper forms, which could take longer to process. The mobile submission feature is expected to reduce delays and administrative burden.
According to the VA, the app now automatically detects when an appointment may qualify for mileage reimbursement. A prompt then appears on the home screen, allowing veterans to review and confirm their travel details with just a few taps.
Veterans must meet specific criteria to be eligible for travel reimbursement. For example, individuals with a service-connected disability rating of 30% or higher qualify for reimbursement if they travel from their home to a VA medical facility using their own transportation.
The VA Health and Benefits mobile app has already been downloaded more than 3 million times, and this new feature further extends its functionality. The app currently provides access to a range of services, including appointment scheduling, prescription refills, and claims tracking.
“VA is evolving to meet the needs of today’s Veterans, and this new feature is proof of that,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins. “We look forward to rolling out many more improvements in the future as we continue to make the department work better for the Veterans, families, caregivers and survivors we serve.”
The department plans additional updates to enhance veteran access and engagement with VA health care and benefits. The mileage claim tool is now live and available to veterans who use the Health and Benefits app.
