Diabetes and Hypertension Management in Geriatric Patients
The final day of the 2016 GAPNA conference included sessions on persistent issues such as diabetes and hypertension.
Marci Farquhar-Snow, CCRN CMC, ACNP-BC, AACC, Mayo Clinic, spoke about the evaluation and management of hypertension in the growing geriatric population. She addressed the current controversies in hypertension management and discussed the use of the most up-to-date and reliable evidence to manage hypertension in this population. She focused particularly on prevention of cardiovascular risk and the complications that may arise from co-morbidities, which have the potential to alter pharmacological management strategies.
Carol McMullin, MD, FACP, CPE, the chief medical officer at Arizona Optum Complex Patient Management, also spoke at a session focusing on diabetes management in the geriatric patient. Her presentation included an overview of the new guidelines for treatment of diabetes. Attendees were instructed on the adapted implementation of these guidelines in the geriatric population.
Access to the in-depth focus sessions, general sessions, and conference handouts will be available in the GAPNA Online Library. All attendees will receive free access to conference sessions at www.gapna.org/library. Attendees can listen to sessions they may have missed onsite or revisit interesting courses. Content will be available approximately 3 weeks after the conference.—Amanda Del Signore
