Administration Announces $74.4 Million in Behavioral Health Funding Opportunities

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), announced about $74.4 million in grant opportunities for programs geared toward preventing substance use initiation, reducing the progression of substance use, and addressing other related behavioral health challenges.

The grants will help facilitate ongoing efforts across HHS to advance the HHS Overdose Prevention Strategy and the Biden administration’s National Drug Control Strategy.

The following grant opportunities were announced in a SAMHSA news release on Thursday:

• $30.4 million for Grants for Expansion and Sustainability of the Comprehensive Community Mental Health Services for Children with Serious Emotional Disturbances, a program that provides resources to improve mental health outcomes for children and youth at risk for or who have serious emotional disturbances, as well as their families;
• $13.1 million for Tribal Behavioral Health, a program to prevent and reduce suicidal behavior and substance use/misuse, prevent overdose, reduce trauma impact, and promote mental health among American Indian and Alaska Native youth; and
• $15.5 million for Strategic Prevention Framework – Partnerships for Success for States and $15.5 million for Strategic Prevention Framework – Partnerships for Success for Communities, Local Governments, Universities, Colleges, and Tribes/Tribal Organizations, each of which helps to reduce the onset and progression of substance misuse and its related problems by supporting development and delivery of state and community substance misuse prevention and mental health promotion services.

“SAMHSA is committed to improving access to behavioral health care services in America's communities,” Miriam E. Delphin-Rittmon, PhD, HHS assistant secretary for mental health and substance use and the leader of SAMHSA, said in a statement. “This funding is a critical investment to help organizations in those communities to implement comprehensive, evidence-based strategies to prevent and address substance misuse and promote mental health.
