FDA Approves Multi-Dose Bottle for Dry Eye Drops

Allergan has just announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved of its new delivery system for cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion (Restasis®).

The new delivery system is a preservative-free, multi-dose bottle offering the same preservative-free formulation of Restasis, the only FDA-approved eye drop that helps increase eyes’ natural ability to produce tears, which may be reduced by inflammation due to chronic dry eye disease.

According to the company press release, the new delivery system, Restasis MultiDose, has patented unidirectional valve and air filter technology that eliminates the need for a preservative.

Restasis MultiDose will be available as 5.5 mL in a 10 mL bottle. Single-use, preservative-free vials of Restasis are currently available as well.—Amanda Del Signore
