VA Exempts 300 000 Health Care Positions from Federal Hiring Freeze

The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) officials announced that more than 300 000 health care positions within the department will be exempt from the federal hiring freeze issued by President Donald Trump. The decision follows growing concerns from lawmakers and veterans’ advocates about the freeze’s impact on VA operations.

Acting VA Secretary Todd Hunter issued a memo clarifying that essential health care roles, including mental health providers, nurses, medical records administrators, and prosthetic specialists, will remain unaffected by the freeze. The exempted positions account for approximately two-thirds of the department’s workforce.

The hiring freeze, implemented shortly after President Trump’s inauguration, aims to curb federal workforce expansion but allows exceptions for military personnel, immigration enforcement, public safety, and critical services such as Social Security and veterans’ benefits. However, VA staff had been working to assess its full impact.

Hunter’s memo states that employees already scheduled to begin work before February 8 will be allowed to start, while all other new hires are temporarily suspended. Some positions related to veterans' benefits processing may also receive exemptions with proper justification.

Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Jerry Moran commended the VA for acting quickly to ensure veterans continue receiving essential care and benefits. However, union groups criticized the hiring freeze, arguing it could disrupt VA services.

Additionally, the VA Center for Development and Civic Engagement stated that the freeze will prevent new volunteers from working at VA medical centers and offices.

Meanwhile, the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee advanced the nomination of Doug Collins for VA Secretary with an 18-1 vote. Collins has assured lawmakers that any White House efforts to improve efficiency would not target veterans’ benefits but rather enhance service delivery.
