The EMS Safety Foundation’s annual trip to Germany for RETTmobil—Europe’s most prominent mobile-rescue conference and trade show—concluded successfully Friday, and the show’s lessons have never seemed more relevant to EMS in the United States.

The safety of our ambulances—how we drive them, how we work in the backs, how we work out of them at scenes—has been a primary component of this year’s special EMS 2020 project, and as always there was a lot to see and learn about it at RETTmobil. To that end, EMS World dispatched publisher Scott Cravens, who delivered the photos seen here, and correspondent Dave Turner, who will provide an in-depth report for our August issue, along with the Foundation team to take it all in. They scoped out hundreds of vehicles and exhibits for what’s new, interesting and better at keeping you alive.

In all, more than 24,000 people attended the show, and more than 450 exhibitors from 19 countries displayed, both records. A highlight, according to organizers, was the Holmatro Rescue Experience, a learning event that posed realistic exercise scenarios to various rescue disciplines. That could recur at next year’s show, May 14–16, 2014 at Fulda’s Messe Galerie.
