CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. --

A young girl fatally struck by a car while trick or treating with her sister and friends was identified Thursday as a 13-year-old Cathedral City resident.

Crystal Delgado was struck by a car traveling westbound on Vista Chino near Avenida Terrazo while trying to cross the street about 8:20 p.m. yesterday, said Sgt. Paul Herrera with the Cathedral City Police Department.

The accident occurred at about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday along Vista Chino, near Avenida Terrazo, said Sgt. Paul Herrera of the Cathedral City Police Department.

Delgado, along with other girls, including her 15-year-old sister, were on the north side of Vista Chino and trying to cross the street, Herrera said.

Some of the girls made it to the middle of the street when a car traveling westbound struck the 13-year-old girl with the rear driver's side of the car, Herrera said.

The driver, a La Quinta resident, was visibly distraught and called 911 following the crash, he said.

Delgado suffered massive injuries to the head, upper torso and major organs, he said.

Emergency personnel performed CPR on Delgado, who was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center, Herrera said. She underwent surgery but died hours later.

Herrera said the tragedy resulted from an accident. He said neither speed nor alcohol was involved and the driver was not at fault.
