SPRINGFIELD, Va. --

Four teenager girls were killed Thursday night when the vehicle they were riding in was involved in a crash with a tractor-trailer on the Inner Loop of the Capital Beltway, according to Fairfax County fire officials.

The incident happened at about 11 p.m., police said.

Transportation officials told News4 it appears the driver at some point decided to get off the Beltway and take the southbound Interstate 95 flyover ramp.

Officials said a repaving operation was under way on that portion of the Beltway at the time of the accident.

The driver crossed over what's called a safety margin in the area, officials said, which is a 10- to 12-feet wide area with white lines. Officials said it's an area you're not supposed to drive into.

It was at that time a tractor-trailer struck the vehicle the teens were riding in from behind, officials said.

A fifth teenage girl was transported to Fairfax Hospital with serious injuries, but hospital officials said they do not appear to be life-threatening.

Traffic in the area was at a standstill late Thursday night but the roadway has been reopened.
