Third "Next Generation" Safety Concept Ambulance Unveiled by AMR and AEV
Greenwood Village, CO, October 23, 2007 -- American Medical Response (AMR) and American Emergency Vehicles (AEV) have rolled out their newest "next generation" concept ambulance that incorporates the latest patient and caregiver safety features.
The one-of-a-kind vehicle was unveiled at the EMS Expo show in Orlando, Fla., on October 11 -- 13. It is currently on display in the AEV/Leader display at the American Ambulance Association's meeting in Las Vegas, which runs from Oct. 22 -- 24.
The prototype is the third Safety Concept Vehicle produced jointly by the two companies. The companies released the first version in 2004 and a second concept vehicle in 2005. AMR and AEV create the concept vehicles to raise awareness, to reduce the safety risks faced by ambulance crews and to provide advanced care to patients.
"AMR continues to work with EMS leaders to enhance ambulance design to improve the safety of caregivers and patients. We are very proud of the feedback we've received from caregivers across the country as they've observed the features built into this and previous Safety Concept Ambulances," said Ron Thackery, AMR's Senior Vice President of Professional Services and Integration.
The new Safety Concept Vehicle 3 is based on a Chevrolet 3500 DR90 mini mod unit. It features numerous innovations that protect medics, patients, motorists and pedestrians from injury.
The Safety Concept Vehicle 3's features include:
- Innovative rear seating equipped with six-point harnesses and sensors that monitor and record the movements of medics in the back of the ambulance. The seating system is designed to reduce the amount of time medics have to leave their secured seated positions to render patient care. The Safety Concept Vehicle 3 is the first ambulance to be equipped with this next-generation technology intended to greatly increase medic safety.
- Seat harnesses are sensitive to forward and side momentum to lock belts into place.
- Redesigned rear compartment lock releases that are hidden from patient view, which make it extremely difficult for patients to exit the ambulance during transport.
- A four-camera video system that greatly improves driver vision to the sides and rear of the ambulance. The system, similar to those currently found on police vehicle, records all ambulance movement.
- External programmable electric signs on both sides of the ambulance.
- A dual on-board suction system.
- An additional lighting control that allows medics to remain seated while treating patients.
- Unique exterior graphics that greatly enhance the vehicle's visibility to other motorists.
