How to Use

The Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) is a comprehensive 24-item symptom scale.

The BPRS is used as part of a clinical interview in which the clinician makes observations among several symptomatic criteria and relies upon patient self-report for other criteria.

How to Score

Rate items 1 through 14 on the basis of patient’s self-report during the clinical interview. Symptoms not assessed mark “NA.” Items 7, 12 and 13 are also rated on observed behavior during the interview. Rate items 15 through 24 on the basis of the patient’s observed behavior or speech during the interview.
