Sudden Death in (Seemingly) Healthy Young Athletes

The possibility that young, physically fit athletes may be susceptible to sudden cardiac death seems counterintuitive. But these tragedies occur often in the absence of prior symptoms. The emotional and social impact of these events can be profound. Two conditions, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and commotio cordis together are responsible for almost half of these deaths. This session will provide EMS providers with useful information for helping to reduce the incidence of sudden death in young athletes within their local communities.
