Featured is the Session 7 Roundtable entitled "Building Out the Next Generation of Electrophysiologists" from Western AFib 2026. With moderators Sana Al-Khatib, MD, MHS, FHRS, CCDS, and Rod Passman, MD, and panelists Tina Baykaner, MD, MPH, Philipp Sommer, MD, and Matthew Segar, MD, MS.
Clinical Summary
- Electrophysiology (EP) fellowship; atrial fibrillation (AF): Panelists said AF ablation now dominates EP lab training, while exposure to SVT cases, conduction system pacing, CRT, VT, and lead extraction may vary by program. They also emphasized training in AF management beyond ablation, inpatient consults, outpatient care, device checks, remote monitoring, and evidence-based medicine.
- EP research training; 2-year clinical fellowship: Speakers said basic/translational research is difficult to start during EP fellowship without prior data or mentorship, while clinical research may be more feasible through case studies, literature reviews, editorials, multicenter trials, journal fellowships, public datasets, and EHR-based analyses.
- EP workforce pathway; US and Europe: Discussants cited work–life balance, job uncertainty, debt, reduced research support, and training-model differences, noting that EP training shifted from 1 research year/1 clinical year to largely 2 clinical years.
