SCAI Announces J. Dawn Abbott, MD, MSCAI, President for 2026–27
MONTREAL – The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions (SCAI) has announced J. Dawn Abbott, MD, MSCAI, as its President for 2026–27. Dr. Abbott assumed the role during SCAI 2026 Scientific Sessions, held April 23–25 in Montreal, Canada.
Dr. Abbott is a nationally recognized leader in interventional cardiology, serving as Professor of Medicine and Director of Interventional Cardiology and the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories at Brown University Health Cardiovascular Institute. Among her many contributions to SCAI, she has shaped the Society’s education and workforce strategy, including co-leading the establishment of the Interventional Cardiology Match, strengthening engagement with fellowship programs, and supporting early-career interventional cardiologists.
“Training is the foundation of everything we do in interventional cardiology, and we have an opportunity right now to strengthen that foundation for the next generation,” said Dr. Abbott. “That means supporting our fellowship programs, working closely with program directors, and ensuring that training reflects the realities of modern practice. At the same time, we need to be thoughtful about how we grow the workforce, using real data to guide decisions and ensure that we are building a sustainable future for the field.”
Notably, Dr. Abbott was an inaugural member of SCAI’s Emerging Leader Mentorship (ELM) program, becoming the first to progress from mentee to mentor to President of SCAI. A high-volume operator, she has authored more than 325 peer-reviewed publications, serves as Deputy Editor of Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions, and has held key SCAI leadership roles, including serving as Chair of SCAI Scientific Sessions and as a member of the Women in Innovations (WIN) Committee.
As President, Dr. Abbott will focus on strengthening training and education, expanding engagement with program directors, and advancing efforts to better understand and sustain the interventional cardiology workforce. Her priorities include aligning certification and training with contemporary practice and ensuring that SCAI continues to support physicians at every stage of their careers.
Dr. Abbott succeeds Srihari S. Naidu, MD, MSCAI, who served as President from 2025 to 2026.
