9/11 Reflections: Jared Schoenfeld

Jared Schoenfeld, ADN, RN, CCEMT-P, NRP

I was out on injured leave that morning, but when the attack started, I was awoken by a friend’s phone call. Using a van from my volunteer fire department, I helped move EMS and medical personal from outlying Queens and Brooklyn locations to the areas around the World Trade Center.

I made numerous trips across the Brooklyn Bridge and helped people walking out of New York City who needed assistance by driving them to a hospital. I returned that night with the ambulance from my fire department in Nassau County and we stayed at the site in the city until the sun came up.

When I returned to duty in October, I worked around the area of World Trade Center, and was assigned to the stand-by duty often.
