AI Innovation Seeks to Streamline MRI Workflows and Diagnostics

Philips has entered into a strategic partnership with Nvidia to develop a foundational artificial intelligence (AI) model designed specifically for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the companies announced. The model will be trained on large datasets to support a range of applications aimed at enhancing image quality, reducing scan times, and improving diagnostic accuracy.

Foundation models are AI systems trained on extensive raw data that can be adapted for a variety of specialized tasks. Philips and Nvidia aim to harness this technology to create a robust MRI-specific platform that enables zero-click scan planning across anatomies, streamlines imaging workflows, and supports interactive image enhancement features such as automated noise reduction.

The collaboration builds upon Nvidia’s existing models—Vista-3D for 3D medical imaging and Maisi for generating synthetic annotated and unannotated images. Philips plans to integrate these capabilities to allow radiologists to preview scans, fine-tune image quality and speed settings in real time, and automate the interpretation of imaging data—steps that could improve efficiency and accuracy across MRI procedures.

This partnership also advances Nvidia’s strategy of expanding into "digital devices," one of the 3 health care sectors it considers core to its growth, alongside digital biology and digital health. As part of this effort, Nvidia has forged partnerships across the industry, including collaborations with GE Healthcare, Illumina, and surgical robotics leaders like Intuitive Surgical.

Philips, for its part, has been steadily embedding AI into its imaging systems. In late 2024, the company launched an AI-powered upgrade to its Blueseal helium-free MRI platform, touting capabilities such as 65% improved resolution and scan times that are up to three times faster. With the new Nvidia alliance, Philips continues to build on its AI momentum, aiming to deliver smarter, faster, and more automated MRI diagnostics.
