J&J Launches AI Fund With Nvidia and AWS to Advance Surgical Innovation
Johnson & Johnson has announced a new collaboration with Nvidia and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to launch the Polyphonic AI Fund for Surgery, aimed at accelerating the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies for use in the operating room.
The fund builds on J&J’s existing partnership with Nvidia, formed in March 2024, and the launch of its Polyphonic platform for surgical software. AWS brings cloud infrastructure and services to the initiative, enabling support for projects in AI model development, data engineering, and governance.
Through its Quickfire Challenge program, J&J will award up to $100 000 in grant funding along with mentorship to selected applicants. The fund invites proposals focused on AI technologies that enhance surgical decision-making, reduce cognitive load, and function as assistive “surgeon co-pilots.”
“J&J, Nvidia and AWS will evaluate and support projects related to AI model development, data engineering and management, and AI governance,” the company stated.
In addition to decision support tools, the initiative seeks projects that improve data handling and drive efficiency in soft tissue surgeries such as colorectal, bariatric, thoracic, urology, gynecology, and general procedures.
Selected teams may receive access to advanced computing tools, including Nvidia chips, AWS cloud services, machine learning toolkits, and software development kits to accelerate innovation.
The current application cycle closes on August 22, 2025, with selected proposals to be announced in September or October. Applications submitted after the initial deadline will be considered on a rolling basis, with awards announced quarterly through the end of 2026.
J&J’s latest initiative signals an expanding role for AI in surgical care and represents a growing convergence between medical technology, cloud computing, and machine learning to support real-time decision-making and procedural efficiency in the operating room.
