The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) has released a new kit composed of three documents that provide information on acne, antioxidants in skincare products and pigmentation problems. The kit “features three leading dermatologists’ expert opinions on the newest beauty technologies, ingredients and research,” according to a statement from the AAD.
The first document in the kit is called “Growing Evidence Suggests Possible Link Between Diet and Acne.” In addition to discussing some of the myths about diet and acne, this document also discusses the link between acne and foods with a high glycemic index and the weak – but possible – association between diary products and this incredibly common skin disease. This document features advice from Whitney P. Bowe, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist and clinical assistant professor of dermatology at the State University of New York Downstate College of Medicine in Brooklyn, NY and lead author of the article “Diet and Acne” that was recently published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
The second document is called “New Technology Could Make Antioxidants in Skincare Products More Effective.” This document features information about botanical antioxidants and plant stem cells. It also includes advice from Doris Day, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist and clinical assistant professor of dermatology at the New York University Langone Medical Center in New York, NY.
The final document in the kit is entitled “Variety of Options Available to Treat Pigmentation Problems.” This last document provides an overview of what pigmentation problems are and what services a dermatologist can offer to help treat these issues. It focuses on sun damage as the cause of pigmentation problems in light-skinned individuals and the fact that dark-skinned individuals are often more prone to pigmentation problems that are harder to treat. Valerie D. Callender, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist and associate professor of dermatology at Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC provides her advice on this topic.
The kit is written in easy-to-understand language and may be a new tool for patient education. For more information, please visit https://www.pwrnewmedia.com/2013/aad/beauty_breakthroughs/.
