Dr. Deepak L. Bhatt named Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Invasive Cardiology
Malvern, PA. – December 17, 2013 – Deepak L. Bhatt, MD, MPH, Executive Director of Interventional Cardiovascular Programs at Brigham and Women’s Hospital Heart and Vascular Center has been named Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Invasive Cardiology. Dr. Bhatt is also a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
The Journal of Invasive Cardiology (JIC), a monthly, peer-reviewed scientific journal, was launched in 1988 to provide a focused, definitive source for cardiovascular specialists to keep up-to-date on advances in this rapidly changing field. The journal publishes original research articles on clinical trials of devices and drugs used in the interventional suite and in post-intervention therapy, comparison of treatment modalities, in-depth reviews, expert commentaries, and brief communications focused on current innovations in clinical practice.

Effective with the January 2014 issue, Dr. Bhatt will take over the position from the current Editor-in-Chief, Richard E. Shaw, PhD, who is stepping down after leading the Journal for over 20 years. “Dr. Shaw’s judgment, leadership, and guidance have been key components to the success of the journal,” said Laurie Gustafson, Executive Editor of the Journal of Invasive Cardiology since its launch in 1988. “During his tenure as editor-in-chief, we have experienced tremendous changes in publishing as well as yearly increases in the number and quality of manuscripts submitted. We are very grateful for the time and energy he has devoted to the growth of JIC and we look forward to our continued collaboration with Dr. Bhatt who has always been enthusiastic in his support of the Journal.”
From 2004 to 2008, Dr. Bhatt served as section editor of JIC’s special section on adjunctive therapies. He also served as a board member for eleven years before becoming Senior Associate Editor in 2012. “Dr. Bhatt brings a vast research and publication experience to JIC from his leadership roles in multiple academic organizations and his widespread publication of cutting-edge research in major medical journals. His expertise and depth of experience will contribute to the growth of JIC and its prominence in the world of cardiology publications,” noted Shaw.

About Deepak L. Bhatt, MD, MPH, FACC, FAHA, FSCAI, FESC
Dr. Bhatt received his undergraduate science degree as a National Merit Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received his medical doctorate from Cornell University and completed a Masters in Public Health with a concentration in clinical effectiveness at Harvard University. His internship and residency in internal medicine were performed at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and his cardiovascular training was completed at Cleveland Clinic. He also completed fellowships in interventional cardiology and cerebral and peripheral vascular intervention, as well as serving as Chief Interventional Fellow at Cleveland Clinic, where he went on to spend several years as an interventional cardiologist and an Associate Professor of Medicine. He served for many years as Director of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship and as Associate Director of the Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship. He also served as Associate Director of the Cleveland Clinic Cardiovascular Coordinating Center. He was then recruited to be Chief of Cardiology at VA Boston Healthcare System where he served for several years. Currently, he serves as Executive Director of Interventional Cardiovascular Programs at Brigham and Women’s Hospital Heart and Vascular Center and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Bhatt was listed in Best Doctors in America from 2005 to 2013.
Dr. Bhatt’s research interests include advanced techniques in cardiac, cerebral, and peripheral intervention. He also has research interests in preventive cardiology as well as the optimal management of patients with acute coronary syndromes. He has authored or co-authored over 600 publications. He is the editor of Peripheral and Cerebrovascular Intervention and Atherothrombosis in Clinical Practice. He was the international PI for the CHARISMA and CRESCENDO trials and co-PI of the three CHAMPION trials. He served as chair of COGENT and helped lead STAMPEDE. He serves as co-chair of the REACH registry. He is also co-PI of SAVOR-TIMI 53 and SYMPLICITY HTN-3. He is the current Chair of the AHA-GWTG Steering Committee. He is Associate Editor for clinical trials for the ACC’s Cardiosource. Dr. Bhatt has been a visiting lecturer at a number of prestigious institutions throughout the world. He has been interviewed extensively by news agencies on topics ranging from resistant hypertension to the role of stenting in heart attacks.

Richard E. Shaw is the Director of Clinical Informatics and Reporting, Quality Department and Research Director, Cardiology Fellowship Program, Division of Cardiology, California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, California.
During his tenure as editor of the journal, Dr. Shaw was also associated with the American College of Cardiology-National Cardiovascular Data Registry (ACC-NCDR), honored as a “Founding Father” of the NCDR, served as a member of the Executive management board of the NCDR, as first chair for the Science Oversight committee governing all ACC-NCDR registries, served as an executive steering committee member for the ACC/STS/FDA collaboration, and a chair of the data element steering committees for both Cath/PCI version 3.0 and ACTION 2.0 datasets.
