(#7) Connecting With The Young Patient Through Media: Children TV Shows That Portray Mental Disorders
Abstract: Background: It is essential for psychiatrists to build rapport with their patients by engaging in meaningful conversation. However, children with mental health conditions are often reluctant to talk. We explore 4 TV shows that can facilitate conversation between a child and psychiatrist: The Dragon Prince (TV-Y7), Avatar: The Last Airbender (TV-Y7), The Legend of Korra (TV-PG) and Arcane (TV-14).
Methods: TV shows were viewed in its entirety to identify characters who meet DSM-5 criteria for mental disorders.
Results: In The Dragon Prince, Callum experiences a panic attack in S2E9 ìBreatheî. Claudia portrays autism with deficits in social interaction and use of repetitive movements and idiosyncratic phrases. In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Sokka depicts ADHD with inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Azula from the same show, exhibits conduct disorder as she is aggressive, deceitful, and violates rules as a child. In The Legend of Korra, Korra portrays MDD and PTSD in Season 4 as she grapples with depressive symptoms and intrusive flashbacks after a traumatic event. In Arcane, Jinx appears schizophrenic with hallucinations, delusions and disorganized behavior. Callum, Sokka and Korra work through their obstacles. Claudia, Azula and Jinx, though often portrayed negatively, undergo many hardships that can spark conversation.
