Donor Demographics and Laboratory Parameters as Predictors of Allogenic Peripheral Stem Cell Mobilization Outcome based on CD34+ cell count in a Tertiary Hospital in the Philippines
Efficient mobilization of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) is essential for successful allogeneic transplantation. CD34+ cell count serves as the primary marker of mobilization adequacy, yet limited data exist on donor-related predictors, particularly in Filipino populations. This study determined the influence of donor demographic and laboratory parameters on CD34+ cell mobilization outcomes among healthy adult donors.
Materials and Methods/Case Presentation/Objective:
This retrospective cohort study included 28 healthy adult donors who underwent peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) collection at a tertiary hospital from 2015 to 2024. Donor demographics and pre- and post-G-CSF laboratory values were collected. Adequate mobilization was defined as a CD34+ cell yield of ≥2 ×10⁶ cells/kg. Generalized Linear Models (GLM) with Poisson distribution and robust standard errors were used to estimate crude and adjusted prevalence ratios (PRs) for adequate mobilization.
Results/Description/Main Outcome Measure(s):
Most donors were male (64.29%) with a mean age of 36.93 years and a mean BMI of 27.39 kg/m². Adequate mobilization was observed in 85.71% of donors. Donor height was significantly associated with CD34+ cell mobilization (Adjusted PR = 1.03; 95% CI: 1.00-1.06; p = 0.040). Other variables, including age, sex, BMI, hemoglobin, hematocrit, WBC, and platelet counts, showed no significant associations after adjustment.
Conclusion(s).:
Height was identified as a significant predictor of CD34+ cell mobilization. These findings support its inclusion in donor screening protocols. Larger studies with higher sample sizes are recommended to validate predictive factors and optimize mobilization strategies.
